Based on the 1881 story by Swiss author Johanna Spyri, 'Heidi' is a series about a cheerful orphaned girl who goes to live with her grumpy old grandfather in his isolated alpine home after her aunt decides she can no longer look after her. She thinks her biggest worries are saying goodbye to the neighbour's cat and losing her doll on the train platform on the way to the village, but things are about to take more a worrying turn for her. Not that she lets any of that get to her. She can't help but be optimistic, and as long as she's surrounded by animals, she's extremely happy. No doubt her presence will have a strong effect on her new guardian, who is clearly in desperate need of joy and company in his life. She learns a lot about respect and friendship on this emotional journey, and indeed her grandfather learns a lot from her.
